Commentary

In 1877 on the 22nd of January Ashgrove State School opened. It had 66 pupils and the head master was named Mr James Brunton Stephens. Out of the 66 pupils only 44 students turned up.

The school's motto "Act Well Your Part" was adopted from a speech praising the stirling efforts of the Provisional School Committee members. The members of the Committee were G.R. Harding, A. Stewart, H.H. Payne, I. Paten, I. Bennet and E.H. Arundell. The speech quoted that "They Acted Well Their Part."

The first groundsman was James Brunton Stephens, he was also the Postmaster at the time! He remained Principal until Dec 1882.

In 1877 Glenlyon House was built and took 8 months to build.

The first owner was Alexander Stewart who lived there until he passed away then the Marist Fathers bought it. They then sold it to Mrs H.
